Is it possible to learn German in 3 months? My progress so far.

Is it possible to learn German in 3 months?

Hallo! Ah, German. One of the most daunting Germanic languages.

It has many similarities with English since they come from the same family. So, if you are a native Spanish speaker but also speak English at a very high level, I recommend learning German through English. That’s my first piece of advice.

In my article How to Learn to Speak a Language in Just a Few Months for Free? I explained the method I used to learn three languages on my own without spending a dime. I also mentioned that I would write an article specifically about the German language, since the previous one was dedicated to Romance languages.

Now, I want to share my progress and experience with learning German. And here’s the big question: Is it possible to learn German in three months? The answer is yes. Yes, it is possible. I’m not saying that in three months, you’ll speak like a native, but in three months, you can make great progress.

We all learn differently, and we need to identify which methods work best for us. If you're someone who prefers to have a teacher guiding you through the process, then I recommend enrolling in either in-person or online classes. But if you're more of a self-taught learner (like I am), then learning on your own might even help you progress faster.

I’m using the same methodology I explained in my previous article. However, I haven’t incorporated listening to music or watching YouTube videos as much yet. Why? Because my progress so far is only ninety days. I need to build more vocabulary before I can start watching videos and listening to music while actually understanding the context of what I’m reading or hearing.

The tool I recommend the most is Duolingo. Sometimes it might seem a bit repetitive or monotonous, but this app has helped me learn Portuguese, French, Italian, and now German. It works wonderfully, especially because it keeps you engaged in learning. It includes reading comprehension, vocabulary, listening, and speaking exercises.

The key to learning a language is perseverance. Not just for languages but for anything you want to master. Learning a language is not something to take lightly. How did you learn to speak your native language? By listening and then speaking. Many people say they’re not good at learning languages, but the truth is, we all have the ability. You just have to be consistent—study every day if you want to see fast and effective progress.

German is a difficult language, but not impossible. After three months of learning, I’m at an advanced A1 level. I started at a beginner A1 level, and in just ninety days, I can already form sentences, understand many words, and when watching series in German, I recognize a lot of vocabulary.

It’s very possible to learn German in three months, especially if you have a trip coming up and need it quickly for basic communication—like ordering food at a restaurant, taking a taxi, asking simple questions, etc.

Remember, perseverance and consistency are the keys to fast learning. Stay motivated and keep going!
